The ‘Berg might not be Cape Town’s best wave, but it is a sure fire candidate for best beach vibe. And on Sunday, the 27th March, that spirit was turned up a notch as the groms from Palama Metsi, Isiqalo, WaveCrush and SurfShack hit the water for a tag-team comp under the banner of Surfing South Africa’s development portfolio.
Local legend Stacey Guy was there to keep tabs on the next generation. Top team honours went to Palama Metsi, with WaveCrush holding silver and Isiqalo rounding off the podium. As local acoustic muso Roland Albertson set the ball rolling with the tunes, and DJ Just Be… got everyone amped, it was great to see a good crowd rolling in for the event. Normal beach go-ers also pitched in and helped keep their favourite patch of sand sparkling.
After fuelling up on Vitamin Water, everyone hit the beach and surrounding areas to pick up all the litter left after a long summer season and relentless on-shores. An old Wave Warrior bodyboard with an ominous crescent chunk taken out of the nose was found. Being under the red alert flag from the Shark spotters, we can only hope the former owner is OK. Although this beach holds Blue Flag status, and the City of Cape Town puts in a good effort in keeping it tidy, young eyes and nimble hands were able to find a whole bakkie load of trash within an hour.
Well done to all competitors and participants. Special thanks to Tasha Mentasi of SSA, Terry Corr of AfriOceans, Patricia Issertes of Surfrider Europe, Karl and Ida of K&I Design Studio for putting their time and effort in to make it happen. Also,
a big thanks to Ocean Minded, Derevko, Hooley and Vitamin Water for supplying the goods.
If you had to read this to find out about it: Eish, you missed it, bru!
